The Din Abrader is primarily for use in determining the resistance of vulcanised rubber to abrasive forces using a cylindrical type drum.

It may however be used to determine the resistance to abrasion of other types of materials such as certain plastics. A cylindrical shaped test piece is abraded across a surface of known abrasiveness for a defined distance under a certain load.
